The Rosetta Stone and the Egyptian voice behind its decipherment.
The stone gave Europe the shapes of a lost language, but the sounds came from Coptic, taught to Champollion in Paris by a priest from Cairo. Pulled from a fortress wall at Rashid in 1799, the stone left Egypt in 1801 and has never come back.
